Helsinki -

Kiuru-area is located in Southern Finland. The 4-hectare area is right next to NCC Industry’s biggest stone quarry and recycling area in Finland. Kiuruarea was built in 2014 and it has been monitored and developed carefully. The NCC site has several different types of habitats all supporting many endangered species. There are hot barren areas and lush small ponds with newts living in them. Rocky fields made with blasted unused stone offer excellent habitats for snakes and different meadow flowers offer food for many butterflies and other pollinators. This area could not have been made without collaboration from several stakeholders, especially two different nature associations and the important collaboration with local beekeepers, who brought beehives to the area.
